Storytelling: a journey into possibility
The author was just finishing up at a workshop when someone came to her and said, “You should write children’s stories.” She smiled and noticed a little tug at her heart, and a thought of, “I don’t know if I can do that…”
Right then she knew that was a lie that she was holding and choosing to believe. “Why couldn’t I? It was a childhood dream after all,” she thought. She had actually already opened herself up to writing once a week: a date with herself, her computer and a chai latte!
Not children stories though…
She read what felt like thousands of books to her children who were one and three at the time. She asked herself, “Why can’t I just let go of the script and make something up?!” As a mother, she wanted her kids to believe that they could do anything and that anything is possible. So why did she not believe that for herself?
Time passed and then one day she felt and knew it was THE day. “Today you are going to make up a story for nap time,” she thought. And she did.
There was bubbling energy as she let go of resistance and started to share what was coming up. It was like stepping into the unknown where the path unfolded with each step.
Her son, daughter and her were lying in bed. Her kids felt the excitement as the first words were spoken: “Kiki is a young girl who lives on a small island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean…”
The “pink” dragon her daughter inserted.
After they got to the part where Kiki had met Harlem—the Pink DRAGON— and ran home to see her mom, something told her to stop and let her son tell the next part of the story. What he said surprised her—and opened her heart!
What he shared wasn’t like the other stories they had read like: There’s is No Such thing as a DRAGON, The Boy in the Drawer or Alligator Baby! These were all favourites that poke fun at how silly parents can sometimes be, not seeing what is in plain sight due to their conditioning.
What he said showed her that he already believed in himself and knew his mom believed in him too.
Now it was just time for her to believe in herself and her own possibility.
That night, with an open heart, she took the beginning of what they had come up with and just let the rest of the story come through. She watched it as a movie being played in her mind and simply recored it.
So there it was, the beginning of Kiki and Harlem’s adventures and her own exploration of her possibility as a story teller, writer—and so much more!
Beyond Storytelling to Living a Life Full of Possibility
The author now sees that to live a life full of possibility requires presence— and storytelling was a gateway to the present moment. It required that she let go and face fear and resistance, open her heart and trust that the present moment held whatever she needed. She remembers feeling such a bubbling of energy when she opened herself up to that space—the space of possibility. She realizes now that that space is available in anything she does, not just writing. That space is available in every moment when one is truly present.
She looks back and sees all the lies she told herself in her exploration of her possibility. How she made up reasons about why not and hid until she was ready to surrender and open up again. She realizes now that none of that matters. All it takes is a moment to decide, to be present and live the possibility that each moment holds.
Lies have a way of vaporizing when they come to light. With awareness, our highest possibility keeps expanding as we continue to surrender to it, allowing us to live a life full of possibility.
Today, she decided to open up to the possibility of writing a blog post…
What possibility are you exploring— or hiding from today?
Ready to bring in the light of awareness, embrace your highest possibility—and live it?!
